Sincona sale 87, lot 2874

This specimen was lot 2874 in Sincona sale 87 (Zurich, October 2023), where it sold for 575 CHF (about US$774 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PORTUGAL Königreich, Luis I. 1861-1889. 5000 Reis 1867, Lissabon. NGC MS62 PL. Avers leicht gereinigt. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar. (kingdom of Portugal, Louis I, 1861-89, 5000 réis of 1867, Lisbon mint. Obverse lightly polished, Finest certified by NGC.)"

This type was struck in Lisbon 1867-89 and is one of the more common of Portuguese gold coins. Gold 2,000 and 10,000 réis bearing this portrait also exist along with a series of silver issues.

Recorded mintage: 45,000.

Specification: 8.86 g, 0.917 fine gold, .261 troy oz AGW, 23.5 mm diameter, this specimen 8.84 g.
