This specimen was lot 39594 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it sold for $446.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 5,000 Reis, 1868. NGC MS-61. Luis I issue, pleasing lemon gold color with light bag marks in the proof-like fields. Nice." This type was struck in Lisbon 1867-89 and is one of the more common of Portuguese gold coins. Gold 2000 and 10000 réis bearing this portrait also exist along with a series of silver issues.

Recorded mintage: 64,200 (a common date).

Specification: 8.87 g, 0.917 fine gold, .261 troy oz AGW, 23.5 mm diameter.
