Portugal 1863 5000 reis
This specimen was lot 75397 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $690. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 5000 Reis, 1863. Lisbon Mint. Luiz I. PCGS AU-55. A shimmery gold piece with a delicately featured portrait of the monarch in saturated golden color. Problem-free and fully pleasing as an example from the latter (and scarcer) date of this two-year issue." This type appeared after the conversion to decimal coinage in 1836. It was struck 1862-63 but is seldom seen compared to later issues that featured a more mature bust.
