This specimen was lot 1864 in Stephen Album sale 37 (Santa Rosa, CA, June 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL: Luiz I, 1861-1889, AE 20 reis, 1863, King's Latin name and titles around XX/ REIS // crowned Belgian coat of arms divides 2½ - R, legend ENSAIO MONETARIO (monetary pattern) above, a few rim taps, AU, RR. Struck in Brussels to demonstrate the size of a new copper coinage." Many patterns were struck for Portugal in 1863 (KM Pn130-143). The twenty réis, along with the other copper denominations, was on hiatus between 1853 and 1871. Only silver fifty, 200 and 500 réis were minted in 1863.
