The first specimen is lot 1386 in UBS sale 84 (Basel, January 2010). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PORTUGAL (Münzstätte Lissabon) Luis I. 1861-1889. 5000 Reis 1862. Kl. Kr. Gutes vorzüglich." (Portugal, Lisbon mint, Louis I, 1861-99, 5,000 réis of 1862. Hairlines, good Extremely fine).

The second specimen was lot 4321 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it sold for $598. The catalog description [2] noted, "Portugal. 5000 Reis, 1862. Luis I, 1861-1889. Young head left. Reverse: Arms in palms. Nice original luster. NGC graded AU-58." This type appeared after the conversion to decimal coinage in 1836. It was struck 1862-63 but is seldom seen compared to later issues that featured a more mature bust.

Recorded mintage: 165,932.

Specification: 8.87 g, 0.917 fine gold, .261 troy oz AGW, 23.5 mm diameter; this specimen: 8.87 grams.
