Sincona sale 47, lot 1676

This specimen was lot 1676 in Sincona sale 47 (Zurich, May 2018), where it sold for 180 CHF (about US$216 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, Konigreich, Louis XV. 1715-1774. 1/20 Ecu au bandeau 1744 AA, Metz. Selten. Gutes sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, twentieth écu of the hair ribbon of 1744, Metz mint. Rare, Good very fine.)"

This diminutive coin, called a 1/20 écu "au bandeau", was the French equivalent of a half dime. In the coinage system of the ancien régime, the 1/20 écu = 6 sols. The type was struck 1740-69 but is recorded for the Metz mint ("AA") in 1740, 1744, 1748-49, 1760, 1765, 1769 only.

Recorded mintage: 1,793, a scarce date.

Specification: 1.47 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 1.51 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/2 № 588, Dr/4 № 857, KM 510.2, Gadoury 284.
