Jean Elsen sale 148, lot 1026

This specimen was lot 1026 in Jean Elsen sale 148 (Brussels, September 2021), where it sold for €200 (about US$284 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon Ier (1804-1814), AR 5 francs, 1812L, Bayonne. Patine colorée. Très Beau à Superbe. (France, Napoleon I, 1804-14, silver five francs of 1812, Bayonne mint. Colorful patina, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This five francs is the most common coin of Napoleon, being minted from dozens of mints in large quantities. The 1812-L, however, is priced about triple the 1812-A.

Recorded mintage: 935,094[2].

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier.
