Sincona sale 39, lot 3975

This specimen was lot 3975 in Sincona sale 39 (Zurich, May 2017), where it sold for 325 CHF (about US$390 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA, Joseph I. 1705-1711 Vierteltaler o. J. Hall. Vorzüglich-FDC. Kleine Kratzer. Herrliche Patina. (Holy Roman Empire, Joseph I, 1705-11, undated quarter thaler, Hall mint. Extremely fine-uncirculated. Small scratches. Most attractive patina.)"

The second specimen was lot 53631 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[2] noted, "AUSTRIA. Holy Roman Empire. 1/4 Taler, ND (1705). Hall Mint. Joseph I. PCGS AU-55. From the Augustana Collection." This undated and rather scarce quarter thaler seems to be the only issue of this denomination during Joseph's brief reign except for a rare 1707 quarter thaler from the St. Veit mint.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7.20 g, 0.875 fine silver; the first specimen is 7.19 g.

Catalog reference: KM-1492 (formerly KM 663), M.T. 816.
