Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 42556
SB0123-42556r.jpg

This is one of a series struck 1760-71 during the reign of Charles III (1759-88). An overdate is noted for the year, 1762/1. The overdate is rare, as well as the legend variety with the cross between "I" and "S" but the normal date is common. The second specimen was lot 42556 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $528. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1762-Mo MM. Mexico City Mint. Charles III. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. Cross between H and I variety."

Mexican numismatists hotly debate which side of the coin constitutes the obverse. Gilboy[2] depicts the shield side as the obverse as that side bears the king's name. However, auction catalogs and dealer listings more frequently use the pillars and globes side as the obverse, as that side bears the date.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.917 fine silver, .798 troy oz ASW.
