Sincona sale 82, lot 1653

This specimen was lot 1653 in Sincona sale 82 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 60,000 CHF (about US$80,298 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles II. 1660-1685. 5 Guineas 1677, London. VICESIMO NONO. First laureate bust, elephant and castle below. Äusserst selten (Extremely rare). NGC AU58." The five guineas was struck as Fr-281 (no symbol), Fr-282 (elephant), Fr-283 (elephant & castle). This variety was struck 1668-78 and with a different bust 1678-84. The elephant was used only 1668-69, 1675 and 1677 to mark gold obtained from Africa.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 41.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, lettered edge; this specimen 41.61 g.

Catalog reference: KM 430.2, Spink 3330. Bull 184 (R5). Fr-283.
