Sedwick Treasure auction 26, lot 115

This specimen was lot 115 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 26 (Winter Park, FL, November 2019), where it sold for $6,545. The catalog description[1] noted, "Potosí, Bolivia, cob 8 reales, 1617M, castles rotated 90 degrees clockwise, Grade 1. Superb specimen with 100% corrosion-free surfaces, beautiful fully detailed shield and cross (the castle rotation quite dramatic), bold assayer (punched over border of dots) and--best of all--very bold full ANO 1617 (with usual erasure of border there, as part of the transition to dated coins), also elegantly toned, truly one of the best examples we have seen among both shipwreck and non-wreck. Pedigreed to the Classics collection, with Fisher tag and certificate #262284. Recovered from: Atocha, sunk in 1622 west of Key West, Florida." This type, the archetypal "piece of eight" of pirate lore, was struck 1605-21, throughout the reign of Philip III. Dates were not added until 1617; even so, many struck after that time are so crudely made that the dates are not legible. It is the most common Latin American silver coin of the seventeenth century and the only one that can be collected by date.
