This type was struck in 1790 during a brief insurrection against Austrian rule. The insurrection was crushed and a few years later, Belgium was occupied and annexed by revolutionary France. Belgium would not obtain its independence until 1830. This specimen was lot 1013 in Jean Elsen sale 135 (Brussels, December 2017), where it sold for €160 (about US$222 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Etats-Belgiques-Unis (1790), AR 10 sols, 1790, Bruxelles. Premier type. D/ Lion deb. à d. R/ Deux mains serrées sortant des nuées, ten. un faisceau de onze flèches. W. 1158. Belle patine. Superbe à Fleur de Coin. (duchy of Brabant, United States of Belgium, silver ten sols of 1790, Brussels mint, first type. Obverse: lion rampant to right; reverse: two clasped hands issuing from clouds, holding a bundle of eleven arrows. Nice toning, Extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
