Sincona sale 68, lot 5377

This specimen was lot 5377 in Sincona sale 68 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 13,000 CHF (about US$17,115 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Obwalden | misc, Dukat 1730, Sarnen. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich-FDC. (canton of Obwalden, ducat of 1730, Sarnen mint. Very rare, especially in this condition, Extremely fine-uncirculated.)"

Unterwalden was one of the three original cantons forming the Swiss Confederation in 1291. Far from the main channels of commerce, her coinage is scanty and rare. This type was reissued in 1732.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold; this specimen 3.38 g.

Catalog reference: KM 25, D.T. 602, HMZ 2-731f. Fr-348.
