Sincona sale 63, lot 3474

This specimen was lot 3474 in Sincona sale 64 (Zürich, June 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Obwalden | misc, Halbtaler 1732, Sarnen. Selten. Sehr schön. (half canton of Obwalden, half thaler of 1732, Sarnen mint. Rare, Very fine.)"

Unterwalden was one of the three original cantons forming the Swiss Confederation in 1291. Far from the main channels of commerce, her coinage is scanty and rare. Unterwalden was divided into the "half cantons" of Obwalden and Nidwalden. This type was accompanied by a thaler and a ducat.
