Bavaria 1765-A thaler Dav-1954

from the Stack's Bowers 2019 ANA sale, lot 22593

This specimen was lot 22593 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. Bavaria. Taler, 1765-A. Amberg Mint. Maximilian III Joseph. NGC MS-63. Original dark multicolor toning with traces of iridescence on both sides. Nicely struck with some scattered light adjustment marks on the reverse. Quite exceptional for this normally well worn issue. This type was struck at Munich and Amberg 1760-77. These 'Madonna' thalers were very popular among the inhabitants and many were made into religious pendants." This type is listed for 1760-77 from Munich (Dav-1953) and Amberg (Dav-1954) and is common. It varies from the prior type (Dav-1952) by having the elector's bust interrupt the obverse legend.
