Bavaria 1764 thaler Dav-1953
The first specimen was lot 1576 in Jean Elsen sale 154 (Brussels, March 2023), where it sold for €90 (about US$117 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, BAVIERE, Maximilien III Joseph (1745-1777), AR Taler, 1764. D/ B. à d. R/ La Madone à l'enfant. Nettoyé. Légère faiblesse de frappe. Très Beau à Superbe. (Germany, electorate of Bavaria, Maximilian III Joseph, 1745-77, silver thaler of 1764. Obverse: bust right; reverse: Madonna and Child. Cleaned, slightly weakly struck, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"
This thaler was struck 1760-77 at Munich and Amberg. The Amberg mint product bears the mintmark "A". It varies from the prior type (Dav-1952) by having the elector's bust interrupt the obverse legend. The Madonna and Child reverse proved very popular and many were saved altho most show damage from use as religious pendants. The second specimen was lot 47101 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $145. The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY. Bavaria. Taler, 1764. Munich Mint. Maximilian III Joseph. NCS EF Details--Improperly Cleaned."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, the first specimen 27,78 g.
