Sedwick Treasure auction 26, lot 507

This specimen was lot 507 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 26 (Winter Park, FL, November 2019), where it sold for $3,570. The catalog description[1] noted, "Potosí, Bolivia, cob 8 reales Royal (galano), 1690VR, ex-Trastamara. Attractively toned VF+ with choice full cross-side details but double-struck pillars side, holed near top of both sides, the cross side a match with Lazaro #228 (rated R3) but pillars side appears to be different, with legend ending in EL PE versus El PERV. Pedigreed to the Trastamara collection (Aureo & Calico auction of December 2017, with original lot-tag #416." This type was struck 1667-1701 for Charles II. It superseded the shield/cross type which was discredited in the debasement scandal of the 1630's and 1640's. Royals, struck for presentation, are all rare and nearly always come holed.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 26.12 g.

Catalog reference: S-P40; KM-R26; CT-328, Cayón-7645.
