Stack's Bowers 2021 ANA sale, lot 40226
SB821-40226r.jpg

This specimen was lot 40226 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. Rigsbankdaler, 1847-FK FF. Altona Mint. Christian VIII. PCGS MS-63 Gold Shield. This wholly original looking survivor exhibits a bold strike with well-formed sharp devices that display frosty features. The surfaces show a rich combination of gray patina with a plethora of hues and plenty of underlying luster. Truly an eye-catching example that is destined to garner much attention from quality conscious collectors." This type was struck 1842-48 at the Altona mint and is very scarce. Copenhagen also struck this type (KM 735.1). After the reform of 1854, the monetary system was 96 skillings = one rigsdaler, two rigsdaler = one (old) speciedaler. In 1874, the coinage was reformed again to the current system of 100 øre = 1 krone.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14.44 g, 0.875 fine silver, .406 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-735.2; Sieg-12.2; H-4B.
