Künker sale 400, lot 309

This specimen was lot 309 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €9,000 (about US$11,676 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Erzherzog Ferdinand, 1564-1595. Guldentaler (60 Kreuzer) 1575, Hall. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 65+* (5970104-005). Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Kabinettstück. Stempelglanz (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Ferdinand, 1564-95, gudenthaler or sixty kreuzer of 1575, Hall mint. Graded NGC MS65+, very scarce in this quality, cabinet piece, uncirculated.)"

By 1600, the gulden had slipped from 5/6 thaler to 2/3 thaler, where it remained until the mid-eighteenth century. The similar Dav-55 has vertical rows of rivets on the archduke's breastplate and dots punctuating the obverse legend.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 24.6 g, silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-57; M./T. -; Voglh. 90 VII.
