Sincona sale 6, lot 1962

This specimen was lot 1962 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 1,300 CHF (about US$1,600 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR/ÖSTERREICH Maximilian II. 1564-1576. Taler 1575, Joachimstal. Münzmeister Jörg Geitzköfler. Gekröntes, geharnischtes Hüftbild rechts mit Zepter. Rv. Gekröntes Wappen auf gekröntem Doppeladler. Winz. Randschlag. Gutes sehr schön. (Austria, Maximilian II, 1564-76, thaler of 1575, Joachimsthal mint, mintmaster Jörg Geitzköfler. Obverse: crowned, armored half-length bust to right, holding scepter; reverse: double headed eagle supports crowned arms. Very fine.)"

This type was struck at Joachimsthal 1573, 1575 and 1576. The joachimsthaler of the counts of Schlick is the ancestor of our dollar. A goat's head mintmark is directly behind the emperor's crown.
