Aureo y Calicó sale 448, lot 270

This specimen was lot 270 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 17,000 € (about US$22,207 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1748/7/6. Fernando VI. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino. S. 4 escudos. Obv.: Coat of arms between F/S and S/value/T. Lions and castles. The 4 of the date upside down and the 4 of the value tilted and rectified over an eight. Stunning example. Extremely rare. EBC- [about extremely fine]." This type was struck at Bogotá in Colombia 1746-56 but few examples show dates. Numista lists all the dates as known. We don't know if all the 1748's are overdates but it seems likely.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.53 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 13.50 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-limonite, KM 27, AC-721.1, Restrepo unlisted.
