Jean Elsen sale 153, lot 1138

This specimen was lot 1138 in Jean Elsen sale 153 (Brussels, December 2022), where it sold for €170 (about US$215 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR ducaton, 1662, Anvers. Deuxième type. D/ B. dr. et cuir. à d. R/ Ecu couronné, tenu par deux lions. En dessous, le bijou de la Toison d'or. Faiblesse de frappe. presque Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver ducaton of 1662, Antwerp mint, second type. Obverse: draped and armored bust right; reverse: crowned arms, supported by two lions, with the jewels of the Golden Fleece. Weakly struck, about Very Fine.)"

The regular type, issued 1636-65 from Antwerp (shown here, with hand mintmark) and Brussels, is scarce but not rare. The other provinces issued this denomination, including Artois, Flanders, Tournai and Luxembourg.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 32.48 g, 0.944 fine silver, 43 mm diameter; this specimen is 32,36 g.

Catalog reference: KM 72.1, Dav-4454, G.H. 327-1b; Delm-284; W. 1001; V.H. 642.
