This specimen was lot 1189 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €700 (about US$970 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, ZUTPHEN, Stad, AR dubbele stuiver, 1605. Vz/ Gebloemd kruis met burchtwapen in het hart. Kz/ Gekroond stadswapen in een achtpas. Zeldzaam. (Netherlands, city of Zutphen, silver double stuiver of 1605. Obverse: floriate cross with city arms in the center; reverse: crowned city arms in an octolobe. Rare, Very Fine.)"
Zutphen is in the province of Gelderland, near Deventer. The municipal mints' habit of coining to short weight and short alloy infuriated the Estates General, which spent most of the seventeenth century on a campaign to close them all. This issue of 1605 was accompanied by a single stuiver (KM 5), hlaf stuiver (KM 6) and copper duit (KM 5), none common.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 4 g, silver, this specimen 1,81 g.
Catalog reference: KM 4, Verk. 27, 1; CNM 2.51.9.
