Zutphen 1687 gulden rev JElsen 121-1530.jpg
Zutphen in 1648

This specimen was lot 1530 in Jean Elsen sale 121 (Brussels, June 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, ZUTPHEN, AR 1 gulden, 1687, Droit: Nederlandse maagd leunend op een bijbel op een altaar. Revers: Gekroond stadswapen tussen de waarde. . Fraai à Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, city of Zutphen, silver gulden of 1687. Obverse: Dutch maid leans on an alter supporting a bible; reverse: crowned city arms. Fine to very fine.)"

This silver gulden is listed in the SCWC for 1687 only. Despite the limited issue, it doesn't receive a high catalog value. Zutphen is in the province of Gelderland, near Deventer. The municipal mints' habit of coining to short weight and short alloy infuriated the Estates General, which spent most of the seventeenth century on a campaign to close them all.

Recorded mintage: 57,935.

Specification: 10.61 g, .920 fine silver, this specimen 10,34 g.

Catalog reference: Verk., 25, 4; Delm-1169; CNM 2.51.26, KM 18.
