This specimen was lot 99210 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $9,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Virtually Gem Specimen of This Highly Coveted Mint-Date, Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton de Bearn 1725-(cow) MS64 NGC, Pau mint. Large palms variety. Among the most treasured subtypes in the whole of the short-lived Mirliton series, the emissions of Pau are commonly regarded as undisputed French rarities, with the Standard Catalog supposing that only 51,000 of this date were struck. Notably absent from the fame Parke-Bernet sale of the Le Chameau's cargo in 1971, we know of just a single specimen graded finer--the Donald Partrick coin, an MS65 which achieved $16,000 when it reappeared on auction in October of last year. Clearly selected for inclusion as the plate coin in Deswelle, Fabre, and Wattier's reference on account of its typically unheard-of quality for the type, this piece features almost perfect centering with rolling, multi-point satin luster. Clearly a trophy of a coin, and quite likely one of the few Mirlitons that were not included in the 1725 Le Chameau shipwreck. Ex. Jean Vinchon Numismatique (October 2002, Lot 331)." The specimen shown is a louis d'or Mirliton du Béarn, grandes palmes, struck at the Pau mint (mintmark a cow) during the minority of king Louis XV. This type was struck 1723-25 only but from twenty-eight mints. It would be extremely rare but for a quantity recovered in 1965 from the wreck of Le Chameau, a French troopship discovered off the coast of Nova Scotia. This type superseded the louis d'or Mirliton, palmes courtes, struck 1723 only, and was superseded in turn by the louis d'or aux lunettes, struck 1726-40.
Recorded mintage: 50,902.
Specification: 6.52 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
