UBS sale 85, lot 972

This specimen was lot 972 in UBS sale 85 (Zürich, September 2010), where it sold for 1,180 CHF (about US$1,346 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

" ITALIEN, Genova, Doge Biennali, 1528-1797. Scudo stretto 1680. Kreuz, in den Winkeln Sterne. Rv. Madonna mit Kind und Zepter auf Wolken, der Kopf umgeben von Sternenkranz. Etwas unregelmässiger Schrötling. Sehr schön-vorzüglich." (Republic of Genoa, biennial doges, 1528-1797, scudo stretto of 1680. Cross with cherubs in corners; reverse: Madonna and Child with scepter, both crowned with a glory. Very Fine to Extremely Fine.)

Altho this type was struck without change from 1637 to 1725, it does not turn up often.
