Savoy 1680 scudo Dav-4171
This specimen was lot 1555 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 2200 CHF (about US$2,707 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN Savoia-Sardegna Vittorio Amadeo, 1675-1730. Scudo bianco 1680, Torino. Die Brustbilder von Vittorio und seiner Mutter nach rechts. Rv. Gekröntes Wappen von zwei Löwen gehalten. Selten. Sehr schön. (Italy, duchy of Savoy, Victor Amadeus, 1675-1730, scudo bianco of 1680, Turin mint. Conjoined busts of the duke and his mother to right; reverse: ducal arms supported by two lions, rare, very fine.)"
This rare scudo was minted in Turin in 1675 and 1680 only. The duke's mother, Maria Giovanna Batista, was regent 1675-80. The duke of Savoy would not be promoted to king of Sardinia until 1720.
