Savoy 1678 lira
This specimen was lot 1430 in Jean Elsen sale 120 (Brussels, March 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIE, SAVOIE, Victor Amédée II (1675-1730), sous la régence de sa mère Maria Giovanna Battista, AR lira, 1678, Turin. Droit: B. accolés à droite de la régente et de son fils. Revers: Ecu couronné. Rare. Petit défaut du flan. Légères traces d'ajustage. Très Beau à Superbe. (Italy, duchy of Savoy, Victor Amadeus II (1675-1730) under the regency of his mother, Maria Giovanna Battista, silver lira of 1678, Turin mint. Obverse: accolated busts of the regent and her son; reverse: crowned arms. Rare, small planchet defect, light adjustment marks, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This handsome coin is listed in the SCWC for 1675-80 and undated. Prior lire of duke Vittorio Amadeo I weighed around 13.35 g; we don't know the reason for the drastic reduction in weight.
