Austria 1620 thaler Dav-3098

Jean Elsen sale 149, lot 1356

This specimen was lot 1356 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €400 (about US$542 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"SAINT EMPIRE, Ferdinand II (1619-1637), AR Taler, 1620, Graz. Pour la Styrie. D/ B. couronné et cuirassé à d., le col fraisé. R/ Aigle impériale éployée, un grand écu ovale sur la poitrine. Patine foncée. Très Beau. (Holy Roman Empire, Ferdinand II, 1619-37, silver thaler of 1620, Graz mint, struck for Styria. Obverse: crowned and armored bust right with ruffed collar; reverse: crowned imperial eagle with large oval arms on its breast. Nice patina, Very Fine.)"

This type was struck at Graz 1620 only. It is not rare; there are numerous appearances in the auction record altho no U. S. firm seems to have offered it in the last fifteen years. The SCWC mentions a variety (KM 262.1) with the reverse legend as "BURGUND" instead of "BURGUNDIAE". The very similar Dav-3099, also struck in 1620, has squared arms on the reverse instead of oval arms.
