Aureo sale 242, lot 224

The specimen shown was lot 224 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 320 € (about US$497 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Carlos IV (1788-1808). 1798. Madrid. MF. 2 escudos. Leves rayitas. Bella. Brillo original. Rara así. EBC. (Charles IV, 1788-1808, two escudos of 1798, Madrid mint, a few light marks, handsome, original luster, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck in Madrid and Seville 1788-1808 for Charles IV. This date is common. Unlike the Latin American mints, which concentrated on producing eight escudos, the Spanish mints turned most of their gold into two escudos.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14220, KM 435.1, Cal-335.
