Sincona sale 11, lot 1044

This specimen was lot 1044 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 850 CHF (about US$1,052 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Kaiserreich Baden, Grossherzogtum Friedrich II. 1907-1918. 10 Mark 1909, Karlsruhe. Vorzüglich-FDC. (grand duchy of Baden, Frederick II, ten mark of 1909, Karlsruhe mint, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

Altho Baden was not a major issuer of coins prior to unification, its issues during the Empire (1871-1918) were substantial. The Baden mint at Karlsruhe (mintmark "G") struck minor coins during the Empire and afterward until today. This type was struck 1909-13 for Friedrich II, grand duke 1907-18.

Recorded mintage: 86,000.

Specification: 3.98 g, 0.900 fine gold, .115 troy oz AGW.
