This specimen was lot 54060 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $8,100. The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. Ducat, 1649. Copenhagen Mint. Frederik III. NGC MS-62. Altogether superb, this VERY RARE issue showcases full radiance in the fields with tremendous detail appearing in Frederick III's bust as well as the reverse centers. Not surprisingly, the single finest certified example of this date, making it a prime example for the collector seeking elite quality Scandinavian gold types." Like most gold issues of the seventeenth century this type, struck 1649-51, is rare and expensive. King Frederik III ruled 1648-70.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.49 g, 0.979 fine gold.
