Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 631

This specimen was lot 631 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €19,000 (about US$25,180 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, François II (1792-1797), AV double souverain, 1793, Bruxelles. D/ T. laurée à d. R/ Ecu ovale couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. De la plus haute rareté Petits coups dans le champ. Superbe. Provient de Frühwald, Vienne, vente 104, 5 décembre 2013, 1734. La dernière monnaie d'or frappée dans les Pays-Bas autrchiens. 1763 exemplaires furent mis en circulation à partir du 31 mai 1793. (duchy of Brabant, Francis II (1792-97), gold double souverain of 1793, Brussels mint. Obverse: laureate head to right; reverse: crowned oval arms over a Burgundian cross, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Very rare, edge nicks, Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck for the emperor Francis I 1792-98 at Vienna (A), Günzburg (H and V), Kremnitz (B) and Hall (F). This is the only issue from Brussels and is rare.

Recorded mintage: 1,763.
