Canada 1942 5 cents KM-33

This specimen was lot 30568 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $705. The catalog description^[1] noted, "George VI nickel 5 Cents 1942 MS66 PCGS, Royal Canadian mint. Currently among only a handful of like-graded specimens in this top quality, featuring the simplistic bust of George VI atop a round, nickel planchet. A perfect representative of this fleeting type, fully lustrous and essentially pristine." Canadian five cent pieces were struck in nickel 1922-42 then converted to "tombac" (a variety of brass) for 1942-43, then in chrome plated steel 1944-45, then back to nickel for 1946-51. Tho the nickel five cents was minted in larger numbers in 1942 than the brass type, it is priced higher. Either it was melted at the mint or it was not saved, being the same design as prewar issues.

Recorded mintage: 6,847,544 plus 3,396,234 in brass (KM 39).
