The first specimen was lot 40635 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $1,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal States. Piastra, 1673. PCGS EF-45 Secure Holder. St Pi[u]s V kneeling, praying to crucifix right, angel carrying shroud of the Battle of Lepa[n]to flies left. Commemorates the beatification of Pope Pius V. Attractive tone." Coinage of the Papal States remains popular today for, besides the strong associations for Catholics, this period saw a string of commemorative issues featuring wonderfully vivid portraits of the various men who occupied the throne of St. Peter. This issue was issued 1673 only. The piastra was the Italian equivalent of the German thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 26.45 g, silver, 0.917 fine.

Catalog reference: Dav-4076; KM-355; Berm-2002; Mutoni III-11.
