Austria 1864-A krone Fr-496

Sincona sale 69, lot 1101

This specimen was lot 1101 in Sincona sale 69 (Zurich, May 2021), where it sold for 10,000 CHF (about US$13,272 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"OSTERREICH, Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916. Vereinskrone 1864 A, Wien. Sehr selten. Nur 1'530 Exemplare geprägt. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, union crown of 1864, Vienna mint. Very rare. Only 1'530 pieces struck. PCGS MS62.)"

The krone was also minted by Saxony (KM 1197), Hannover (KM 232), Prussia (Fr-2439) and Bavaria (Fr-280) but does not seem to have been a success, as survivors are few. This issue, minted 1858-65 at Vienna, Milan, Venice and Karlsburg, is rare. The Austrians dropped the krone after 1866. Half krones also exist.
