Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 35244

This specimen was lot 35244 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Ducat, 1864-A. Vienna Mint. Franz Joseph I. PCGS MS-61." This type was struck 1860-65 only but is common. Gold ducats were struck throughout Franz Josef's long reign and come in many types. This type is known from Vienna, Kremnitz, Venice and Karlsburg. After the reorganization of the Hapsburg empire into the Dual Monarchy in 1867, Hungary received her own coinage separate from Austrian issues.
