Ponterio sale 177, lot 12473
Russia 1726 2 rubles rev P177-12473.jpg

This specimen was lot 12473 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $70,500. The catalog description[2] noted, "RUSSIA. 2 Rubles, 1726. NGC AU-58. High Grade Catherine I Gold 2 Rubles. Catherine I (1725-27)." This rare type is from Catherine I's short, unhappy reign as empress. It is reduced from the two rubles of Peter the Great (Fr-91), which was 4.1 g. The coin was raised to 3.24 g, 0.917 fine in 1756 and then lowered to 2.61 g in 1766 but was never struck on a regular basis.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.47 g, 0.781 fine gold, 0.087 troy AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-101; KM-178; Bitkin-2; Severin-106B; Diakov-2.
