SB124-54300 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 54300 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $114,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. Gold 2 Rubles, 1727. Moscow (Red) Mint. Peter II. NGC AU-53. Mintage: A VERY RARE offering from one of the two brief reigns following the very lengthy one of Peter "the Great," this gold denomination displays some minor wear and evidence of a period spent in circulation, but nevertheless remains enchantingly original and without issue. A solid portrait of the czar graces the obverse, with a well-defined figure of St. Andrew standing defiantly upon the reverse. A hue of deeper toning highlighted by cabernet and burnt sienna augments the fields and devices throughout, adding even more charm to this exceptional specimen. From the Rothschild-Piatigorsky Collection." This type was struck 1727-28 with and without a hair tie. It would pass for a ducat were it not debased. There are also two rubles of Catherine I for 1727.

Recorded mintage: 11,728.

Specification: 3.47 g, 0.781 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-104; KM-184; Bit-10.
