Jean Elsen sale 157, lot 749

This specimen was lot 749 in Jean Elsen sale 157 (Brussels, December 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Albrecht en Isabella (1598-1621), Cu dubbele penning, 1616, Brugge. Vz/ Gekroond monogram AE. Kz/ Gekroond wapenschild op een Bourgondisch kruis tussen het jaartal. Zeer Fraai à Prachtig. (county of Flanders, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, copper double penny of 1616, Bruges mint. Obverse: crowned "AE" monogram; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross divides the date. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This type of 1606-10 and 1615-16 is listed in the SCWC as a two deniers, its French name. We will catalog it by its Flemish name, dubbele penning. It was slightly heavier than a gigot so we conclude it was worth more.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper, this specimen 2,54 g.

Catalog reference: KM 6; G.H. 299-6; V.H. 599.
