The five centavos denomination was changed to a brass coin in 1942 when World War Two drove up the price of nickel. The weight of the coin was reduced to the size shown here in 1966 and issued in this size until 1973, when mintage was suspended, inflation having made the denomination useless. All of these later issues have very low catalog values but take some searching to find in nice, unspotted condition.
Recorded mintage: 14,620,000 (common date) plus 1,000 proofs.
