CNG Lissner sale, lot 1299

This specimen was lot 1299 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,452. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL, Empire. Pedro II. 1831-1889. AR 2000 Réis. Rio de Janeiro mint. Dated 1889. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 63. Light iridescently toned uncirculated with very strong luster. Last year of the type. Purchased from DAP Coins, May 1980." In 1868 the silver coinage was redesigned to adopt the portrait of the emperor Pedro II, who already appeared on the gold coinage. The type went thru several minor modifications before settling on the final type shown here, struck 1886-89. The 1888 and 1889 are very common but the 1886 is rare. In 1889, the emperor was overthrown by a conspiracy of slaveowners fearful of his advocacy of abolition. World public opinion forced the oligarchy to abolish slavery the next year anyway.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 25.5 g, .917 fine silver, .751 troy oz ASW, this specimen Ø37 mm, 25.45 g, 6h axis.

Catalog reference: KM 485.
