This specimen was lot 538 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €9,000 (about US$12,130 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, HERZOGTUM Rudolf August, 1666-1685. Löser zu 3 Reichstalern 1685, Zellerfeld. Ausbeute der Grube Lautenthals Glück. Mit Wertpunze; . D : G : RUDOLPH · AUGUSTUS DUX BRUNS : ET LUN : Fünffach behelmtes, 11feldiges Wappen, unten zu den Seiten die geteilte Signatur R - B (Rudolf Bornemann, Münzmeister in Zellerfeld 1676-1711) sowie die Jahreszahl 16 - 85, l. die eingepunzte Wertzahl//(Blumenverzierung) TU TANDEM ABIECTAM REDDES DEUS ALME SONORAM Lautenspielerin steht halbr. auf Schnecke, im Hintergrund Stadtansicht von Lautenthal und Bergwerksanlagen, oben l. strahlende Sonne mit Gesicht, r. strahlender Name Jehovas. (duchies of Brunswick-Luneburg and Brunswick Wolfenbuttel, Rudolf Augustus, 1666-85, triple thaler of 1685, Zellerfeld mint, for the Lautensthal's Luck mine, with denomination punch. Obverse: five helmeted crest, manifold arms, date below and denomination punched in lower left; reverse: Good Fortune, standing on a snail, with view of town and minehead behind; above left, the shining sun; above right, the name of Jehovah in a glory. Very scarce in this quality, attractive example with fine toning, minor edge defects, extremely fine.)"
This rare issue comes with mintmaster RB or HH and with or without the denomination punch. Mining thalers were almost never struck in multiples.
