Stack's Bowers 2020 NYINC sale, lot 20251

This specimen was lot 20251 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $18,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. 1000 Yuan, 1987. Panda Series. NGC PROOF-65 Ultra Cameo. A massive proof issue, this 12 ounce offering presents exceptionally mirrored fields along with alluring, frosted devices that yield a cameo nature." This denomination was struck in this format 1984-95. It was accompanied by a five ounce gold panda (KM 164) as well as the usual smaller sizes, down to 1/20 ounce.

Recorded mintage: 2,445.

Specification: 373.24 g, 0.999 fine gold, 70 mm diameter.
