This specimen was lot 996 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 3,750 CHF (about US$4,643 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg, Herzogtum Friedrich I. 1675-1691. 1 ½ Taler o. J. Mit Wertpunze. Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Frederick I, 1675-91, 1½ thaler without date, with value counterstamp. Extremely fine.)"
Ernest the Pious, duke of Saxe-Gotha, inherited Saxe-Altenburg in 1672 from its duke Frederick William III. Ernest's death in 1675 caused another reshuffle but his heir, Frederick I, managed to retain both Gotha and Altenburg and assumed the title of duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg in 1680. This type is noted with and without a "1½" stamped into the reverse. It is not listed in Davenport. A rare double thaler (Dav-LS423) also exists.
