Künker sale 294, lot 4399

This specimen was lot 4399 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €70 (about US$94 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"WELTKRIEG UND INFLATION, 200 Mark 1923, E. Polierte Platte. (Germany, Weimar republic, 200 mark of 1923, proof.)"

This coin is an aluminum 200 mark from a type issued 1923 only from six mints, including Muldenhutten (mintmark "E"). Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design. Soon after this issue, the German mark collapsed completely, destroying the savings of the German middle class and radicalizing it.

Recorded mintage: 11,250,000 plus 4,095 proofs.

Specification: 1.67 g, aluminum, 27.1 mm diameter.
