Westphalia 1923 50 million mark notgeld
This specimen was lot 2605 in Steve Album Auction 52 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2025), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "WESTPHALIA: Weimar Republic, 50,000,000 mark, 1923, with original box of issue, tombak notgeld without gilt, the Saxon Steed from the Province of Westphalia // Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom und zum Stein portrait, a fantastic lustrous mint state example! PCGS graded MS66." This is from a series of notgeld tokens issued in 1923, including fifty, 100, 500, 10,000, ¼ million, 2 million, 5 million and 50 million mark. We doubt they were intended to circulate, as they are never found worn.
Recorded mintage: 106 060 (broad rim) + 37 664 (narrow rim) + 78 464 in aluminum (8 g) + 995 000 small size (5.6 g, aluminum, 37.8 mm diameter).
Specification: 32.5 g, gilt brass, 44.5 mm diameter.
