This specimen was lot 1833 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 1 real, 1683 V. Choice for this wreck despite a small corroded hole at center, bold complete pillars with clear date, nearly full cross. With original certificate from the salvor/conservator. Recovered from Dodington, sunk in 1755 off South Africa." This type was struck in the name of the degenerate Charles II 1667-1701. Assayer de Villar stamped coins with a "V" 1679-84 and a "VR" 1684-97.
