This specimen was lot 3161 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Taler 1688. Gutes sehr schön. (Germany, archbishopric of Salzburg, thaler of 1688, good very fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1687-1709 and is common. Except for the change of ruler, it is virtually identical to the prior type (Dav-3508) issued 1668-86. This type is also catalogued as Dav-1234.
Recorded mintage: unknown but common.
Specification: silver, this specimen 28.47 g.
