Sincona sale 91, lot 3195

This specimen was lot 3195 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 850 CHF (about US$1,123 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Freiburg/Fribourg, Stadt und Kanton, Vierer 1741, Freiburg. Äusserst selten. Sehr schön. Exemplar der Slg. Zuberbühler, Auktion SINCONA 16, Zürich, Oktober 2013, Los 5348. (Switzerland, canton of Fribourg, vierer of 1741, Fribourg mint. Extremely rare, Very fine.)"

A vierer was half a kreuzer. This type was struck 1736-44 and 1751 and this is the key date. Whereas in most of the Swiss cantons 160 kreuzer made a thaler, in Fribourg 56 kreuzer made a gulden.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: billon, this specimen silver, 0.55 g.

Catalog reference: KM 45, MCV 67f, D.T. 663f, HMZ 2-280m.
